Avoiding Scams: The basics
from Model Mayhem on Vimeo.

Model Mayhem will never send you an email asking for your login information. If you receive an email that seems to be from Model Mayhem asking you to click a link and enter your password information, do NOT click the link and mark the message as SPAM.

Phishing: First Step to Scams

Scammers get into Model Mayhem accounts by stealing your login information. This is commonly referred to as phishing or hacking.

How does phishing work?

  1. You will likely get an email that seems to be from Model Mayhem. The email may look like it is from Model Mayhem (@modelmayhem.com) but when you check the actual email is NOT from @modelmayhem.com.*
  2. You may also get a PM from another member who has already been phished.
  3. The email or PM asks you to send back your login information or click a link that seems to go to Model Mayhem, where you need login to continue.
  4. The website looks exactly like Model Mayhem.
  5. You send your password back in an email OR you click the link and enter your login information on a site that looks like Model Mayhem.
  6. The next thing you know, your profile has been taken over by someone else!

* Note: Some official emails from Model Mayhem may come from an email that is @ibemail or something similar. This is because Model Mayhem is owned by Internet Brands (ib). If you have any questions about the email just login and ask a moderator! Also, some companies are Certified Partners of Model Mayhem. As such, they are authorized to ask for Model Mayhem login information in order to provide services for members. It is safe to supply Model Mayhem login information to these companies. Here is the complete list of Certified Partners.

How do you avoid getting phished?

  1. Never, ever, ever share your password with anyone. Ever! No one but YOU needs it.
  2. Don’t use the same password on your Model Mayhem account as you do on other accounts.
  3. Change your password at least every two months.
  4. Don’t click any unfamiliar links in any email.
  5. Don’t download any files from an unknown sender.
  6. Only log in to Model Mayhem from www.modelmayhem.com – and nowhere else!

This message asks you to click a link and login to MM, but notice that the link DOES NOT go to MM. DO NOT click the link and DO NOT enter your login info. Clicking the link and entering your information is how your Model Mayhem account will be hijacked!

This is what you would see if you do click on the link. This is a “spoof” of MM – it looks just like MM to trick you into logging in. LOOK at the address in the address bar, it is clearly NOT modelmayhem.com.

If you get a message on MM like this one, please find the “flag message” link under the message and right above the “send reply” box.

How do I know I’ve been phished?

  1. You may receive PMs with replies from other members you never messaged.
  2. Your outbox will have messages you never sent in it.

Help! I’ve been phished! What do I do?

  1. Don’t panic! The mods are here to help kick the scammer out of your profile and get you back in.
  2. If the mods haven’t sent you a message already, click the Help button at the top of the site and click Contact a Moderator.
  3. Let the mods know that you think your account has been compromised, and then follow their instructions carefully.

If you follow the tips here, your account information should be safe and you shouldn’t get phished or hacked again.

Scams: The Reason for Phishing

Once someone takes control over someone’s account, the scammer gets to work right away. They take over your inbox and start sending out a flood of messages intended to essentially lie, cheat, and steal. This behavior has been around for a long time – almost since the invention of the internet!

The best weapon against these scams is knowledge. Knowing what a scam might look like or ask for helps you spot a scam and protect yourself, your account, and your wallet!

Common Scams and How They Work

Pre-Payment “Nigerian” scams

You may see these in your email or have heard stories about them. A wealthy Nigerian prince is offering to send you a check to deposit in your bank account if you’d only send him a small amount back! Or the UK lottery just drew and you are the winner of an astounding sum of money – you just need to forward your banking details to the lottery commission and the funds will be transferred immediately. These scams are the SAME… except the offer is from a magazine or photographer wanting to pre-pay to work with you.

Spot it v1:

  1. The scammer offers to send you a check – before meeting you or even signing a contract!
  2. You are informed that you get to keep a large portion of the check. Payday!!!
  3. However, you are also told that once you cash the check you have to send someone else (a makeup artist, a hair stylist, a wardrobe stylist, a studio) a “small portion” as their fee.
  4. You may also be asked to send a portion of the check back because of an overpayment or some other reason.

Spot it v2:

  1. The scammer wants to pay you in advance for work you haven’t even done yet. Nice, right?
  2. All you have to do is give them your mailing information so they can send you a check.
  3. You may also be asked for your banking info so they can send you a direct deposit.
  4. You will likely be asked to send a portion of the check back.

Understand it:

  1. That check is faker than a spray tan!
  2. Your bank will bounce the fake check and you will be liable for the money.
  3. Giving out your banking information can result in money being stolen directly from your account!

Bottom line: No legitimate industry professional is going to hire someone unknown to them, sight unseen, and pay them in advance for a modeling/photography/makeup job. If you follow through with this scam, you will send the scammer YOUR real money and will have to pay back whatever they stole.

Up-Front Fee “Mystery Shopper” scams

This is a typical scam that might be tricky to spot but always has a recurring theme – you giving away your money!

Spot it:

  1. The scammer wants to recruit you (for an agency, for a huge photo shoot or seminar, etc.)This is your lucky break!
  2. You may be asked to send money before signing a contract for administrative or seminar fees, or for transportation costs.
  3. You may actually meet someone and then be asked to pay in order to start working.

Understand it:

  1. The scammer is counting on your desperation to do anything to get work.
  2. Professionals do not generally make you pay them before you work together.

Bottom line: Being asked to pay someone before you work with them is always suspicious, and you should ask for a contract before handing over ANY money.

Spyware “Virus” scams

While you may be more likely to see this scam on Facebook or over Twitter, it may happen on Model Mayhem.

Spot it:

  1. Someone sends you a link to click on via PM, or you see the link posted in the forums.
  2. You may be asked to download a file to view a portfolio or roll of images too big to put on Model Mayhem.

Understand it:

  1. These links can download very harmful viruses and spyware to your computer.
  2. This in turn may disrupt the functionality of your computer.
  3. You may get phished!

Bottom line: Always, always be careful about clicking links online, and never download anything from someone without talking to them about it first. If you’re not sure, just don’t click or download!

But is this REALLY a scam?

If you think you might be getting scammed – you probably are! It is always better to be safe than sorry.

You can also use our Forum Search tool and find examples of scams posted by members who have received scam messages.

  1. Open search
  2. Search for the terms “Is this a scam?”
  3. You should find hundreds of threads on the subject.
  4. Read through some of these threads to get a good idea what scams look like.

OK – How do I report a phishing or scam message?

This is the easy part!

  1. If you were sent a PM on Model Mayhem, Flag the PM.
  2. If you were sent an email with a suspicious link asking you to login to Model Mayhem, forward it to mods@modelmayhem.com (We don’t need to see email scams.)
  3. Click on the Help! link at the top of the page and click Contact a Moderator.
  4. Send a report to the mods letting them know which profile sent you the scam message and that you reported it.

The mods will take care of the rest. Since most people sending scams have actually been phished by a scammer, we will help that person get back into their account.

Other Safety Tips

Don’t publicly use your login email address

If you have an email on your profile page, and it is the same as the email you use to login with, either take it off or change it to something else. Likewise, don’t post tags or leave comments with your login email. Not only is this half your login information, this is also how scammers send you those phishing emails to begin with! People on Model Mayhem can also always PM you for your email address.

Did we mention never ever telling anyone your password EVER?

Now enjoy the Mayhem!

Now that you’ve armed with some basic knowledge, you can go about your networking business without worrying about getting ripped off. And if every member of this community understood just these basic things, the scammers would be forced to move on to greener pastures!

So, you fancy yourself as a little Will Shakespeare do you? Want to get a little more exposure for your MM profile or your business? Or you just got this really great technique that you just HAVE to get off your chest? Oh my gawd. Well have no fear, Model Mayhem Library is here.

Model Mayhem welcomes articles on Modeling, Photography, Post-Production, Style/Makeup, and Using MM. The suggested length is 500 words, but submissions of any length will be considered. In addition, every article requires at least one image (more are better).

We’re looking for experts in all those fields. Do you have techniques you can teach or tips you want to share? How about writing a series on how to become a model, photographer, MUA, stylist, or retoucher?

We ask that all submissions be sent exclusively to MM. We will not consider articles that have already been published in print or online (except for your personal website or blog).

Submissions must be sent by email to edu@modelmayhem.com. Please put the name of the author followed by the topic in the subject line, and paste the text of the article into the body of the message. Remember to include a short bio of the writer, image credits, and your MM#.

We make every effort to review submissions promptly. If the article is accepted for publication, you will hear from us within five business days. If you have not heard from us within five business days, please assume that we will not be able to publish your article.

We also welcome article ideas. Do you have a question that needs answering by an expert, or can you answer a question? Let us know if you want to share industry advice, tips and tricks, reviews, or just about anything else relevant to MMers.

If you have any questions you can send them directly to MM EDU.

Thank you for your interest in writing for MM.

How to Embed Images on Your Profile

$
0
0

Here’s how to embed images on your profile. (To format text on your profile, see here.) We recommend doing this in moderation. If you embed too many images on your profile, it may take longer to load, and people will have to scroll farther down to leave tags.

To embed images on your profile, you’ll be working in your “edit profile” page: http://www.modelmayhem.com/mystuff/profile/edit.

Note that we do not allow M-rated images on profiles.

Embedded images on your profile come from two places: inside your portfolio and outside your portfolio. We’ll discuss both options, as well as how to turn your images into links.

1. EMBEDDING IMAGES FROM INSIDE YOUR PORTFOLIO

We recommend this first, as your portfolio images lack the bandwidth and date expiration limitations that third parties outside Model Mayhem sometimes have. There are two ways to embed images from inside your portfolio, using MM Forum Code and using the image URL.

A. Using MM Forum Code

This is the easiest way to embed images on your profile, as we’ve already done the work for you.

(1) Small

To embed a small version of a portfolio image on your profile, click on the “MM Forum Code” link below the image. That will reveal a bunch of code highlighted in blue. Simply copy (Ctrl-C or Command-C) and paste (Ctrl-V or Command-V) that code into the text box in your profile editor. Click “update” at the bottom of the page to save. The embedded image on your profile will link to the image in your portfolio.

(2) Full size

To embed a portfolio image in full size on your profile, follow the instructions in (1) above, except remove “_m” from the code (it appears just before “.jpg”).

B. Using the image URL

This way requires a little more work than 1A. Right-click on your portfolio image to get its URL. Depending on your browser, you’ll select an option like “Copy Image Location” (Firefox), “Copy Image URL” (Google Chrome), or “Properties > Address” (Internet Explorer). Copy and paste the URL into your “edit profile” page text box. Add [img] and [/img] to the beginning and end of the URL with no spaces. Your finished code will look like:

[img]http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/numbersandlettersandslashes.jpg[/img]

2. EMBEDDING IMAGES FROM OUTSIDE YOUR PORTFOLIO

This is a little more uncertain, as images hosted elsewhere sometimes have bandwidth or date expiration limitations. Additionally, do not infringe upon others’ copyrights or trademarks. Make sure you have permission before embedding images that are hosted elsewhere.

A. Images hosted elsewhere

Add [img] and [/img] to the beginning and end of the image URL with no spaces. Your finished code will probably look like: [img]http://someurl.com.jpg[/img]. You can only embed image types supported by browsers, e.g., JPEG, GIF, PNG.

B. Images not hosted elsewhere (i.e., on your hard drive)

If an image is on your hard drive, you’ll need to upload it online somewhere. Here are three typical places to upload images: Photobucket, Imageshack, Flickr. Online image repositories like these typically have a sharing option called something like “IMG code” or “Forum code”. Simply copy and paste that into your “edit profile” text box. If that isn’t available, try the directions in 2A.

3. HOW TO TURN YOUR IMAGES INTO LINKS

To turn your image into a link, add [url=URLWHEREYOUWANTTOLINKTO] and [/url] immediately outside your [img][/img] tags with no spaces. For example, to link an image to Model Mayhem’s home page, your code would look like this:

[url=http://modelmayhem.com][img]http://URLofyourphoto.com.jpg[/img][/url]

That’s it! Go embed images on your profile. (Just don’t overdo it!)

(Note that only Premium and VIP members can embed images on their profiles. To upgrade to Premium and VIP status, go here.)

Model Mayhem Image Rules

Introduction

This article is intended to address the most common questions and concerns regarding the image rules Model Mayhem receives. However, this was also written to advise you that if you upload, display, submit, or set as avatar any image that falls in to the Grey Areas defined below, that image is subject to moderation at the discretion of the moderation team, even if there are other, similar, images on Model Mayhem that bear striking resemblances to your own image.

If you are reading this, then most likely you were provided this link by a member of the moderation team as a result of some questions regarding images and how the image rules are applied to them on Model Mayhem. Keep reading – your questions will likely get answered below.

Please make sure to read this entire article if directed by the moderators to do so. Claiming you weren’t aware of the rules or that you never received a warning about the Image Rules after receiving the link to this article will not be accepted. We expect all of our members to follow the rules and to keep current with any changes that might be made.

What Is the Grey Area?

As each image is unique and different from the next image, each image has to be judged independently based on the content of that particular image. The Grey Area is essentially where images fall in-between what is clearly an image rule violation and not an image rule violation.

Keep in Mind: The image rules on Model Mayhem are not arbitrary, they were put there on purpose. Not only are there minors on Model Mayhem who view portfolios, but Model Mayhem also has to answer to advertisers who help keep Model Mayhem a free website.

Please review the graphic below. We’ve included a brief summary of the change from the light-side of the spectrum to the dark-side. Model Mayhem has a staunch policy against images on the dark-side.

Lightest:

  • Represents completely work-safe images and avatars
  • Images are typically G-rated and do not show any elements considered Mature (M)
  • These images can be used as avatars and posted to profile pages

Slightly more grey:

  • Represents images that are acceptable for portfolios, but not acceptable for avatars or profile pages
  • Images are typically PG-13 to R rated and probably show elements considered Mature
  • Mature elements are not completely work-safe and should be marked “M” in portfolios
  • These images are not allowed to be posted to the forums
  • If in doubt, mark it “M”!

Grey:

  • Represents images that are not clearly acceptable, but not clearly prohibited
  • Most images here will be scrutinized by the moderator team for rule violations
  • Images in this area can either be removed or allowed to stay
  • Images of a similar nature may stay while others may be removed

Darkest:

  • Represents images that are never allowed on Model Mayhem
  • These images will be removed without hesitation by the moderation team
  • Uploading these images might result in the removal of your profile
  • Be safe – just don’t upload them!

This Grey Area principle can be applied to other things on Model Mayhem as well, from forum posts and threads to photo comments, lists, etc.

Mature Image Elements You Should Know

Pubic Area

  • Also known as the “bikini area”
  • Area covered by average bikini bottoms – thigh to thigh, from pubic bone down
  • Area that would normally be covered by pubic hair
  • Doesn’t include “skimpy” bottoms that only cover the pubic area or part of pubic area

Bare Buttocks

  • Any image that contains two visible butt cheeks
  • Thongs, strings, and sheer fabrics that still show two cheeks are considered bare buttocks
  • These images are considered Mature and are not to be used as avatars or on profile pages

“Stars and Stripes”

  • Any non-skin tone shape or bar added to an image to hide Mature elements
  • Allowed for avatars and on profiles, but must completely cover Mature elements
  • Images with skin tone stars are not OK for avatars as they’re clearly not work safe!

Prohibited Image Elements You Should Know

Emphasis on the Genitals

  • Any image where the genitals are the focus of a shot
  • Any image that has more than a certain ratio of genitals-to-image
  • Any image where the shot is visibly entirely genitals, even covered

Avoid this prohibited element by ensuring your image has enough of the model and surrounding area by zooming the shot out. You should also avoid poses that put genitals on prominent display – having genitals thrust into the camera are only going to be considered emphasis on those parts.

Non-Flaccid Penises

  • Any image that contains a penis that does not appear to be fully flaccid

Avoid this prohibited element by ensuring that the penis in your image appears to be completely flaccid. If the penis does not appear to be fully flaccid, or there might be questions about it being flaccid later, just skip the upload

Grey Area and Image Moderation

We are not singling you out, and we are not picking on you. We receive reports from other members, and the moderation team also scans portfolios, avatars, and contest entries for rule violations daily. This is the job of the moderation team. If you follow the site and image rules, you will find that the moderation team won’t contact you about your images.

Moderators are human, and there is some subjectivity with how an image is viewed by them. However, moderators are trained to know what a rule violation looks like and see possibly hundreds of rule violations each day.

Occasionally, mistakes might be made, but this is a rare occurrence, as the moderation team discusses images that fall in the Grey Area – avatars, portfolio images, contest entries – before removing anything. If your image has been removed then it was more than likely discussed by the team first.

We will review any objections to check to see if a rare mistake might have been made, but if we determine that the image was rightfully removed we will not overturn the decision, and we will not argue with you about the image’s removal.

Finally, there are no loopholes in the moderation of an image. The rules are quite clear about this. You will have to find a way to live with the decision and move on with your networking and creating wonderful art.

Tips to Avoid Image Moderation

  • Don’t use Model Mayhem to network for images we don’t allow
  • Avoid uploading or displaying images that violate the rules
  • When in doubt, ask! Moderators will be glad to help you figure out if your image is acceptable

Additional Notes

Fairness and Consistency

You will probably see lots of images that are violations of the rules as you navigate the site. You may think to yourself, “Gee, how come these things get to stay up?” While it might seem like the moderators are playing favorites, the chances are that the mod team simply hasn’t seen the violation yet. Report it (the report link is above every image in a portfolio) and a moderator will review it!

Please keep in mind: If the moderation team reviews an image and determines that the image is OK and can stay, do not message asking why the image has not been removed and do not argue that it should have been removed, as the team has already discussed the image.

We do try our best to be fair and consistent, however, do remember that moderators are people. There are millions of pictures on Model Mayhem – it would take dozens of moderators every day pouring over every portfolio to find all the violations.

Here are some of the subjective variables, or differences moderators are on the lookout for:

  • Poses
  • Composition
  • Light and shadows
  • The way monitors display light and shadows (Yes, it can alter how we see an image!)
  • Human anatomy

As you can hopefully see, it’s virtually impossible to be 100% consistent in image rulings. As noted previously, every image is unique!

While we understand why an image removal may seem unfair to you, we ask that you keep in mind that what’s allowed on the site and what you want in your portfolio are not always going to be compatible. To quote some famous people, “Who said life is fair?”

Consideration of “Art”

We do not see artistic merit when looking at a photo. We only judge images based on what your image is showing. This means your image is only being judged and decided by the elements outlined in our Mature or Prohibited section.

We are happy that you feel your image is a work of art, and if we were an art gallery who curated your work we might agree with you. However, your work is being hosted on Model Mayhem and as such must follow the rules. There are no exceptions.

If you feel that Model Mayhem is stifling your artistic expression because we keep removing images of crotches, bums, boners, and explicit sex acts, or we keep overwriting your avatar for not being clearly worksafe, then it’s likely that Model Mayhem isn’t the right website for you.

Image Age

Even if an image has been on Model Mayhem since 2006, if it violates the site rules it will be removed or censored accordingly. An image that old that violates the rules simply means a moderator has not yet seen the image to take action on it.

Discrimination

Model Mayhem believes in diversity, and we embrace it! Image moderation has nothing to do with who you are, what you believe in, or anything else about you as an individual. Image moderation is about the image itself. If you feel you are being discriminated against because your images have been moderated, please take a moment and rethink your claim. Your images are really all we care about!

Censorship

If you feel like you’re being censored, that’s because you are, and this is no different than having rules for guests who come to your home. When someone violates your house rules, you kick them out at your discretion. The same applies to Model Mayhem.

As a privately owned website, Model Mayhem has the right to determine what is and is not allowed to be displayed on any page on its domain. What is and is not allowed is outlined by the Terms of Use, Site Rules, and Image Rules. By using the site, you agree to these conditions, as well as the condition that Model Mayhem may decide to remove some of the content you upload.

Just like in a home, if you don’t like the rules or don’t want to follow the rules, you are welcome to leave and find another place to visit.

How to Remove GPS Info from Your Photos

We review hundreds of profiles daily and have noticed that many have one or more photos with GPS or geotagging information embedded within the file. That’s probably not a good idea since it makes the location where the photo was taken available to anyone who can view the photo. If the photo was taken in your home, you may have unwittingly revealed your home address to the public. Let’s use this photo as an example:

If you click on the following link you can see all that is available from the photo itself: Metadata

I know it’s scary, but don’t panic, there are things you can do to avoid this. First, you have to deal with existing photos and next you should think about how to deal with photos you will take in the future using either your smart phone or a GPS enabled camera.

Removing GPS Info from Existing Photos

Your existing photos may be on your smart phone, tablet or computer and there are different ways of handling them depending on the device they’re on:

iPhone or iPad

There are several apps available in the App Store, we don’t recommend one over the other, but Metadata Cut is one to look at.

Android Phone or Table

There are also several apps in the Google Play Store and we don’t recommend one over the other, but Photo Editor is one to look at.

Computers

Whether you use a PC or Mac there are many apps available that will easily remove GPS data from your photos. If you use any of the Adobe photo editing programs, such as Lightroom or Photoshop, they can be used for this without the necessity of another program or app.

Preventing GPS Info from Being Embedded in New Photos

The best way to avoid this issue in the future is to turn off geotagging on your smart phone. Here’s how to accomplish this:

iPhone or iPad

  1. Tap the “Settings” icon from your iPhone’s home screen
  2. Tap the “Privacy” menu
  3. Choose “Location Services” from the top of the screen
  4. Look for the “Camera” setting and change it from the “ON” position to the “OFF” position

Android Phone or Tablet

The process for disabling this feature depends on the camera app of the manufacturer of your phone or tablet. So there is no exact answer to this question, however, the process is very similar.

On most Android phones and tablets, you can just open camera app and tap on “Settings”. From the “Settings”, scroll down until you see the option “Geo tags” (or similar option) and disable it. There is also a chance you may see a particular icon instead of “Geo tags” options.

Assuming this is of concern to you, we suggest that you delete any photos currently in your Model Mayhem portfolio that contain geotagging information. Photos taken in your residence or other locations you wouldn’t want shared should get your immediate attention and it is something to seriously consider as soon as you are able. Once you’ve removed the geotagging information, feel free to upload the same photos again.

And, remember if you ever have any questions, comments or concerns you can always click on the “Help” link at the top of every page. There’s lots of information there and you’ll also be able to Contact A Mod if you need more assistance.
